Everyone has worries pop into their head from time to time, but sometimes they won’t go away and start to impact your everyday life.
ReachOut WorryTime interrupts this repetitive thinking by setting aside your worries until later, so you don’t get caught up in them and can get on with your day. This means you can deal with worries once a day, rather than carrying them around with you 24/7.
What we think
This app has been produced in consultation with the Centre for Clinical Interventions, ReachOut WorryTime is based on cognitive behavioural techniques that are used by health and well being practitioners to assist people with anxiety and stress.
The app is easy to follow and provides 2 steps – set time and set duration to make time for worries. It then directs the user to a page which is to add worry and see WorryTime button. The screen is sectioned so that you can add worries. There is no limit to how many worries can be added.
The user is able to see the worries added by pressing on the cloud image. The user is able to add the same worry more than once and track how many times it has been added.
The app shows a visual lock at the bottom of the screen which is present until the set start time. When the time starts the user can choose to look at them for a specific period of time e.g. 10 minutes. There is a visual timer to help show how long you have left to worry about added worries. The worries are presented on paper like images that you can choose to try solve the worry, leave it for later or scrunch it up to throw away.
The user would then have a period of time to manage worries with the duration selected nearing the opening of the app. This doesn’t have a number based visual timer. When WorryTime ends it gives a positive mindfulness prompt to “bring your mind back to the present and get on with your day”. It also provides a prompt for rewarding self to do something that makes you feel good. If a worry is not “thrown away” it is not deleted from the list.
The user isn’t prompted to set another WorryTime and is required to access the settings bar on the left of the screen.
The app can be used in a variety of different environments. It provides opportunities to look at worries and write new ones at any time. The app can be used by the individual or with support of a key therapist/support worker or parent.
There is a visual motivator in scrunching up worries and flicking them off the screen. It helps with visualising that these worries are gone until added again.
There is no wrong worry to input and has spell check to support with typing.
The app has a reminder for when WorryTime is scheduled even when app is closed. It can be used in a variety of different settings.
The keyboard is enlarged for easy identification of letters and is presented as a keyboard that is used for texting.
The app doesn’t allow for new functions to be added to personalise. However, provides opportunities for the user to add personal worries.
The app allows the user to type worries in and consider actions that can help manage worries. It is supportive in awareness of worries, introducing mindfulness and setting time to worry in a supportive manner.
The app provides links to emergency supports such as LifeLine however is only located when looking at the settings offered. Having an icon such as a phone on the main page could assist with easier access to crisis numbers and information.
The app was easy to use and set times. It provided supportive comments about placing worries in the app and was very satisfying when scrunching worries up to flick away.
